Ariane 5 – Sixth and final launch of 2008

21 December 2008

Yesterday evening, an Ariane 5 ECA launcher lifted off from Europe’s Spaceport at Kourou, in French Guiana, on its mission to place two multi-role telecommunications satellites into geostationary transfer orbits.

Lift-off of flight V186 took place at 23:35 CET/Paris on 20 November (22:35 UTC/GMT; 19:35 UTC-3/Kourou). The satellites were accurately injected into the correct transfer orbits about 30 minutes later.

The payload comprised Hot Bird™ 9, which will deliver television signals and interactive services to direct-to-home antennas and cable networks throughout Europe, North Africa and the Middle East, and W2M, which will provide television broadcasting and data network services to the same regions using a fixed antenna, while a steerable beam will be re-oriented in-orbit to deliver services as required. The payload mass was 9220 kg; the satellite masses totalled 8340 kg, with payload adapters and dispensers making up the additional 880 kg.

Arianespace and Europe’s Spaceport are planning as many as eight launches during 2009 – which will make it the busiest year ever for Ariane 5. The ability to sustain high launch rates has already been demonstrated – during the period 12-month period from August 2007 to August 2008, there were nine launches (V177 to V185, inclusive).

Flight timeline

The Ariane 5’s cryogenic, liquid fuelled main engine was ignited first. Seven seconds later, the solid fuel rocket boosters were also fired, and a fraction of a second after that, the launch vehicle lifted off.

The solid boosters were jettisoned 2 min: 20 sec after main engine ignition, and the fairing protecting the payload during the climb through the Earth’s atmosphere was discarded at 3 min: 16 sec. The launcher’s main engine was shut down at 8 min: 57 sec; six seconds later, the main cryogenic stage separated from the upper stage and its payload.

Four seconds after main stage separation, the engine of the launcher’s cryogenic upper stage was ignited to continue the journey. The upper stage engine was shut down at 24 min: 55 sec into the flight, at which point the launch vehicle was travelling at 9308 m/s (just over 33 500 km/h) at an altitude of 708 km and the conditions for geostationary transfer orbit injection had been achieved.

At 26 min: 44 sec after main engine ignition, Hot Bird™ 9 separated from the launcher’s upper stage, followed by W2M at 32 min: 10 sec.

2008 - focus on Ariane; 2009 - focus on the expanded family

Evry, France, January 6, 2009

Arianespace confirmed its position as the world’s leading launch Service & Solutions company in 2008, and is actively gearing up for 2009 with its expanded family of launchers.

2008: focus on Ariane

Since being founded in 1980, Arianespace has signed over 300 launch Service & Solutions contracts and launched 265 satellites for 70 customers – more than half of all commercial satellites now in service worldwide.

Arianespace continued its sustained launch rate in 2008, with one Soyuz and six Ariane 5 launches, boosting more than 70 metric tons of payload into orbit. With 28 successful launches in a row, Ariane 5 confirmed its technical maturity. It launched the Jules Verne ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) to the International Space Station last year, and also launched ten geostationary satellites, fully half of all those launched worldwide. In just 12 months, from August 2007 to August 2008, Arianespace carried out nine Ariane 5 launches, clearly illustrating its operational capabilities. The company logged approximately 950 million euros in consolidated sales for the year, and it should reach break-even or better for the sixth year in a row.

Results were just as impressive in terms of orders. Winning 13 contracts out of a total of 18 open to competition, Arianespace clearly confirmed its world leadership. Furthermore, Arianespace was chosen to launch the entire Galileo constellation. As of January 1, 2009, Arianespace had a record backlog of orders, including 27 geostationary satellites, plus launches into other orbits: eight by Ariane 5 and seven by Soyuz. These figures do not include Galileo launches.

Impact of the crisis

The global financial crisis limited the number of new contracts available in 2008. Only 18 new launch contracts were signed last year, versus 25 in 2007, as launch capacity exceeded market demand.

Furthermore, the average weight of satellites decreased. Out of the 13 contracts signed by Arianespace in 2008, seven were for “3 ton” class satellites, and there was a limited number of satellites in the “6 ton” class.

The tight credit situation had varying effects. Several new operators froze their projects, but the largest operators were unaffected. They are pursuing their development, which underpins a solid replacement market.

2009: focus on the expanded family

Arianespace will cope with these new conditions by calling on an expanded family of launch vehicles.

Six to eight Ariane 5 launches are slated this year, including the Herschel-Planck and Terrestar-1 missions. In addition, Soyuz will be launched for the first time from the Guiana Space Center, enabling Arianespace to carry out eight Soyuz missions by the end of 2010, from either French Guiana or Baikonur. The development of the Vega light launcher will be completed in 2009, leading to a commercial service entry in 2010.

This expanded launcher family gives Arianespace greater agility in meeting its customers’ evolving needs.

Arianespace will continue to maintain its world leadership by offering the widest range of launch possibilities and calling on its proven capabilities, including 28 successful launches in a row of Ariane 5 and 21 of Soyuz, plus a solid commitment to successful, timely launch services.

Ariane 5

Launch Prices Still Rising Despite Poor Global Economy

PARIS — Commercial satellite launch prices have continued to rise in recent months despite the excess of launcher capacity worldwide and early signs that the global credit crunch is delaying some satellite programs, Arianespace Chief Executive Jean-Yves Le Gall said Jan. 6. He said a fully loaded Ariane 5 rocket, with two telecommunications satellites weighing a combined 8,500 kilograms, currently is priced at around 160 million euros ($220.1 million).

Europe expects busy year in space

15 January 2009   BBC

London. Europe will launch two flagship space telescopes this year, and three satellites that will acquire key data about ice, gravity and soils on Earth, the BBC revealed. European Space Agency boss Jean-Jacques Dordain set out his priorities for 2009 at a Paris briefing on Wednesday. He said 2008's successes, which saw the Columbus science lab attached to the space station, were "exceptional".

"Last year was really an outstanding vintage," he added. "But there'll be no breathing space going forward."

Esa activity this year will witness the recruitment of new astronauts and the start of Soyuz launches from the European spaceport at Kourou in French Guiana. The Soyuz initiative has required considerable investment at Kourou, to construct facilities that are a facsimile of those at the Russian rocket's traditional home of Baikonur, Kazakhstan.

"This will be a significant milestone in many ways," explained Mr Dordain.

"We really do need Soyuz because at least half of Esa missions are due for launch on Soyuz, whether that be scientific missions or Galileo [satellite-navigation] satellites."

On the much-delayed Galileo programme, Mr Dordain said 2009 would be marked by positive progress, with the first contracts to build the system finally awarded in the coming months. Esa is a buoyant organisation at the moment. Last year, it not only delivered Columbus to the space station but flew its space freighter, the ATV, to the platform for the first time.

The cargo ship, which performed flawlessly, will become the main way of resupplying the ISS when the US shuttle fleet retires. And in November, the 18 member-states of Esa agreed to pump 10bn euros into the organisation to fund programmes over the next three-to-five years. Ministers said increased spending on hi-tech space industries would help Europe ride out the effects of the global economic slowdown. But Mr Dordain said he was mindful of the difficult circumstances being experienced by many small enterprises operating in the space sector. He said it was imperative that Esa handled contracts properly, and encouraged prompt payment of bills.

"I am thinking particularly of small suppliers, SMEs, which are very important for us here at Esa," he explained.

"They provide us with the technology we need. As they are small companies, they are far more fragile and vulnerable, especially in cash terms. I certainly don't want Esa to cause problems for companies such as these."

Europe earmarks major projects in Year of Astronomy

by Staff Writers
Paris (AFP) Jan 14, 2009

The European Space Agency (ESA) on Wednesday spelt out an array of top-line projects, including new orbital telescopes to peer into deep space, that would be launched in 2009, the International Year of Astronomy.
"2009 will be particularly rich and valuable," ESA's director-general, Jean-Jacques Dordain, said in a meeting with journalists where he outlined the agency's plans for the year.

The schedule includes the launch of Herschel Space Observatory, designed to capture long-wavelength radiation from some of the most distant objects in space.

Herschel, whose 3.5-metres (11.37-feet) diameter mirror is the largest ever built for a space telescope, is scheduled to be launched on April 12 alongside the Planck Observatory. It will study the Universe as it was shortly after the Big Bang.

Other big research schemes this year are the launch of three Earth-observation satellites -- GOCE, for studying terrestrial gravity; SMOS, for soil humidity; and Cryosat 2, investigating ice and snow cover.

Two more European modules will be added to the International Space Station (ISS) -- a junction element called Node 3 and a windowed unit, or "cupola," for observation by the crew.

After much delay, the ISS crew will double this year from three to six members, which should enable better use of the facility as a base for scientific research.

Later this year, ESA's launch pad in Kourou, French Guiana, will see the maiden liftoff of Vega and Soyuz rockets, intended to complement the Ariane-5 heavy launcher in the light and medium range of services offered by the commercial firm Arianespace.

Last November, ministers from the 18 ESA countries, as well as from Canada, approved spending of nearly 10 billion euros (12.8 billion dollars) to continue existing programmes and fund future projects.

France and Germany are ESA's two biggest contributors, accounting together for more than half of its budget.
