Crew Wraps Up Treadmill Work, Prepares for June Spacewalks

(NASA) - Flight engineers Koichi Wakata and Michael Barratt worked to complete the maintenance of the station’s treadmill vibration isolation system Friday. The astronauts spent several days working on the exercise unit to improve its performance after years of on-orbit use.

A second treadmill will be delivered in the summer aboard space shuttle Discovery during the STS-128 mission. The new treadmill, named Combined Operational Load Bearing External Resistance Treadmill, or COLBERT, was named after comedian Stephen Colbert.

Commander Gennady Padalka and Barratt are checking the Russian Orlan spacesuits in advance of two spacewalks planned for June 5 and June 10. The spacewalkers will relocate docking hardware inside and outside the Pirs docking compartment. This sets the stage for the arrival in November of Russia’s new Mini-Research Module-2 (MRM-2). The MRM-2 will provide improved access to the Zvezda service module’s zenith docking port for Soyuz and Progress space vehicles.

The station crew members also spent some time Friday on a physics experiment dubbed FLYING SAUCER. They videotaped and described the behavior of a disk spinning and not spinning in various orientations in microgravity.

俄新网RUSNEWS.CN星城(莫斯科州)5月5日电 俄罗斯宇航员无需排队等10年即可登上太空,因为国际空间站将扩大人员编制,变成六人一组。

俄罗斯宇航员训练中心第一副主任尤里·吉德津科5日表示:“从今年起,我们将向太空发射四艘‘联盟’号飞船,轮流速度将会比从前快得多。”

第一位宇航传人,宇航员训练中心宇航员队代理队长谢尔盖·沃尔科夫说,如今的年轻人比他那一代人排队时间要短一半。

吉曾科说:“如果每年飞四次的话,那就需要等5年,而不是像我们一样等11年。”

他透露,近期内宇航员队伍将“补充新生力量”。

他指出:“最终将进行国家考试,在这次重要的考试之后,我们将补充新的力量。”

他透露,不会补充女性宇航员。

On May 29, the crew of the International Space Station (ISS) will double, from three astronauts to six. In a media briefing held today, NASA said that it has accomplished the necessary tasks ahead of Expedition 20--a Soyuz mission that will carry the second half of the crew, scheduled to launch on May 27. Not only will this complete the station's first six-person crew, but the mission will be the first time that crew members from all five ISS partners--Japan, Russia, Europe, Canada, and the United States--are aboard.

Increasing the crew capacity of the space station is a major advance for space-science research and for travel beyond low Earth orbit to the Moon and Mars. "It opens up more possibilities, such as scheduling more science, because we don't have to use all our people for just required maintenance to the station," said Courtenay McMillan, Expedition 20's lead flight director, during the briefing. But, she added, it also presents communication challenges: "Now we have twice as many people and not as many phone lines." When the shuttle or Soyuz spacecraft docks with the station, there are short periods of time when there are six or more astronauts aboard the station, using the additional spacecraft for support. However, it's only for a week or two, and then three astronauts remain living on the station.

The expansion of the station meant modifying its life-support systems. Most notably, NASA built a comprehensive water recovery system that uses specially designed filters and chemical processes to cleanse waste liquids--astronauts' urine and perspiration--so that they become drinkable water. The system has had a few technical difficulties, but according to Dan Hartman, manager of Integration and Operations for the ISS program, it should be operational by next week. A new toilet, crew quarters, galley, and treadmill (named after comedian Stephen Colbert) have also been developed to support the additional crew members.

NASA's main concern, should missions to resupply the station be delayed, is food. "We can handle a month-period slip for resupply, and if that time was going to be extended, then we would react by using other missions," said Hartman at today's media briefing. NASA has acquired a robotic spacecraft from Japan--the H-II Transfer Vehicle (HTV)--to resupply the station in between scheduled shuttle missions. The HTV will connect to the Japanese Experimental Module (JEM), called Kibo, and will be "a major new capability to resupply the station, allowing for the launch of rack modules and external and internal payloads," said Hartman.

"The logistics are done, and we have the supplies ready to expand the crew and allow them to stay for an extended period of time," added Ben Pawlik, Expedition 20's increment manager, at the briefing. The station will even have room to support seven additional crew members when the shuttle docks at the ISS.

    据俄罗斯媒体7日报道,国际空间站第20长期考察组成员于6日以优秀成绩顺利通过了行前考试。

    据悉,该考察组成员共3人,其中俄罗斯宇航员罗曼·罗曼年科将担任飞船指令长,比利时宇航员弗兰克·德温内与加拿大宇航员罗伯特·瑟斯克将担任飞船随航工程师。

    按计划,国际空间站第20长期考察组成员将于5月27日乘坐俄“联盟TMA-15”载人飞船奔赴国际空间站。届时国际空间站上常驻人员数量将增加到6名。

    目前国际空间站内共有3名宇航员,他们是美国宇航员迈克尔·巴拉特、日本宇航员若田光一和俄罗斯宇航员根纳季·帕达尔卡。

Russian space agency Roskosmos and NASA have reached agreement on the price of a flight for US astronauts on the Russian Soyuz space shuttle.

Starting 2012, the flight will cost $51 million, head of Roskosmos, Aleksei Krasnov, said in Moscow on Wednesday.

“We have approved with our American partners the sum of $51 million, starting from 2012,” Krasnov was quoted by Itar Tass as saying.

According to Krasnov, the cost of the ride on the Soyuz, the three-seat spacecraft currently used to carry people to the ISS and back, will depend on the inflation rate.

Prices for tourist flights will also grow inline with inflation and the foreign currency exchange rate, Krasnov added.

The head of Roskosmos said the future of space tourism depended on the amount of Russian astronauts working at the orbital station.

If Russia has three cosmonauts working at the ISS at the same time, the Soyuz capsule will have no vacant space left to seat space tourists, he said.

Meanwhile, Roskosmos and Space Adventures are selecting candidates for the possible September flight to the Space Station.

  2005年10月,美国国会在《伊朗防扩散法案》修订之后,准许恢复与俄罗斯航天局的太空交易。由于俄罗斯与伊朗的核合作,《伊朗防扩散法案》以前是禁止这样的交易的。

  在2007年,NASA与俄罗斯航天局签署了一份价值7.19亿美元的合同,合同规定除了运送5.6吨的货物,还要往返运送15名宇航员到国际空间站。这样每个座位的价格大约是4800万美元,或一次三座的飞行大约为1.44亿美元。

俄新网RUSNEWS.CN莫斯科5月15日电 据新加坡《联合早报》报道,从2012年起,俄罗斯运送美国太空人往返国际太空站,每趟将收费5100万美元,同时也将恢复太空旅游服务。

俄罗斯在2006年向美国征收每趟2180万美元,过后,往返国际太空站的太空游客票价,已从每趟2000万美元上涨到3500万美元。

报道说,由于哈萨克斯坦取消在9月派遣见习太空人升空的计划,俄罗斯联盟号(Soyuz)太空船如今有一个空位给太空游客。

由于现有美国太空梭已经使用将近30年,将在明年停用,新的太空船最早也要等到2014年才会完成,美国宇航局需要依靠联盟号太空船往返太空站。

The next best thing to flying to the International Space Station is NASA's virtual ringside seat.

NASA teamed up once again with Microsoft to offer online users two new three-dimensional, interactive tours – one of the orbiting outpost and another of the next Mars rover. Space enthusiasts can see and interact with photos of the station and the rover and navigate around them in three virtual dimensions with the click of a mouse.

The magic is made with hundreds of digital photographs that astronauts snapped, all stitched together using Microsoft's Photosynth technology.

"Although you're not flying 220 miles above the Earth at 17,500 miles an hour, it allows you to navigate and view amazing details of the real station as though you were there," Bill Gerstenmaier said in a statement. Gerstenmaier is an associate administrator for Space Operations at NASA Headquarters in Washington.

Viewers can click and drag their way around NASA's hardware and zoom in to see the details like the space station's modules and solar arrays or zoom out for a big-picture view of the complex.

NASA astronaut Sandra Magnus took the internal images of the space station during the 129 days she lived onboard. She photographed the station's exterior while aboard the space shuttle Discovery, which flew her back to Earth in March. The rover images were taken of a full-scale model in a Mars-simulation testing area at the Jet Propulsion Laboratory in Pasadena, California.

Photosynth has multiple potential benefits for NASA. Engineers can use it to examine hardware, and astronauts can use it for space station familiarization training, NASA said in a statement.

NASA's Photosynth collection can be viewed at http://www.nasa.gov/photosynth. The NASA images also can be viewed on Microsoft's Virtual Earth Web site at http://www.microsoft.com/virtualearth.

  负责研制飞碟模型的俄“能源”火箭航天企业介绍说,飞碟模型内部安装了两个电脑中央处理器散热风扇,通电后一个风扇沿着飞碟模型轴心线向下出风,制造上升力,另一个风扇沿飞碟模型边缘的水平切线方向出风,为其提供旋转力。两个风扇的前部都装有能改变风向的百叶窗,通过改变风扇转速和百叶窗的叶片角度,就能控制飞碟模型在失重等特殊条件下旋转、悬浮或朝一定方向飞行。据悉,试验全过程将被摄像并传回地面,制成具有特殊意义的物理教学片。

ESA today presented the six individuals who will become Europe's new astronauts. The new recruits will join the European Astronaut Corps and start their training to prepare for future missions to the International Space Station, and beyond.

The new astronauts are:
1. Samantha Cristoforetti, Italian
2. Alexander Gerst, German
3. Andreas Mogensen, Danish
4. Luca Parmitano, Italian
5. Timothy Peake, British
6. Thomas Pesquet, French


They were selected following a Europe-wide recruitment process that started last year. Following thorough psychological, medical and professional screening that started with 8413 valid applications, they are the first new recruits to join the European Astronaut Corps since 1992 under this second-ever astronaut selection carried out by ESA.

The choice of six was made taking into account flight opportunities planned not only under ESA programmes and activities but also those planned in the frame of a Memorandum of Understanding between the Italian Space Agency (ASI) and NASA. This was done in agreement with the Italian authorities and in accordance with the ESA Council decision in 2002 to create a single corps of astronauts in Europe.

"We are at a turning point in ESA's human spaceflight activities. Last year, with the launch of the Columbus laboratory and the Jules Verne Automated Transfer Vehicle, ESA became a fully-fledged member of the International Space Station partnership. We are now entering a new phase of utilisation of the unique capabilities offered by the ISS and preparation for international exploration of the Moon and beyond," said ESA Director General Jean-Jacques Dordain.

This new phase required the recruitment of young talent able to draw on the experience gained by the existing astronauts, able to become, step by step, the representatives of Europe in space who, together with their international colleagues, will live, work, explore and bring back to planet Earth and its citizens their unique experience, their accomplishments and their confidence in the future. They all represent the generation that will move from low earth orbit to the Moon," Dordain added.

"I am very proud of the result achieved with this selection," said Simonetta Di Pippo, ESA Director of Human Spaceflight. "Proud, as a European, of the calibre of the candidates, proud of the organisational efforts made by ESA and in particular by the European Astronaut Centre. This result exceeds our greatest expectations. Not only do we have a group of outstanding astronauts; we also have a representation of European countries that reinforces the support for human spaceflight and exploration in Europe." She added: "With the ISS lifetime being considered for an extension to 2020 and beyond, I believe today's selection of six new astronauts shows where Europe stands."

"This is a very important day for human spaceflight in Europe," continued Di Pippo. "These young men and women are the next generation of European space explorers. They have a fantastic career ahead, which will put them right on top of one of the ultimate challenges of our time: going back to the Moon and beyond as part of the global exploration effort."

Europe's new astronauts will start their basic training at the European Astronaut Centre (EAC) in Cologne, Germany. With ESA's ISS partners also having completed or currently finalising their own recruitment campaigns, they will also join a new class of international astronauts who will be prepared for future space missions to the International Space Station from 2013 onwards.

  新浪科技讯 北京时间5月21日消息,据美国太空网报道,近日国际空间站上举行了一次别开生面的庆祝酒会,航天员们喝下自己的“尿液”。不过这些尿液都经过了国际空间站上废水循环利用系统处理,可以放心饮用。

  在国际空间站ECLSS废水循环利用系统启用仪式上,美国宇航员迈克尔-巴拉特称引用循环利用的尿液很酷,有科幻小说的色彩。目前在国际空间站内的3名宇航员,美国宇航员迈克尔·巴拉特、日本宇航员若田光一和俄罗斯宇航员根纳季·帕达尔卡,同地面上美国宇航局约翰逊航天中心、马歇尔航天飞行中心的科研人员一起庆祝了国际空间站ECLSS废水循环利用系统的启用。

  据悉,这套废水循环利用系统耗资大约2.5亿美元,用于国际空间站每天将尿液和废水处理转化成饮用水,供宇航员补充水分、制作食物、洗澡以及生成氧气。这套系统从去年11月开始已经应用于美国建造的氧气生成器,它通过电解作用把水分离成氧气和氢气。

  艾丁是约翰逊航天中心的一名项目经理,他负责研发国际空间站装备,以支持6名航天员工作生活的需要。据了解,国际空间站最多可以同时有6名宇航员一起工作生活。ECLSS废水循环利用系统是去年11月同美国“奋进号”航天飞机STS-126机组成员一起运抵国际空间站的,但是由于出现了一系列故障,所以时至今日才正式启用。

  新浪科技讯 北京时间5月21日消息,据英国《卫报》报道,在国际空间站上,日本宇航员若田光一(Koichi Wakata)进行了一系列有趣的零重力实验,其中就包括测试飞毯以及为自己“武装”上可自行除臭的内裤。

  数百年之前,故事大王们便凭借他们惊人的想象力创造了飞毯,但这个飞毯只是一种幻想,并没有成为现实。数百年之后,日本宇航员若田光一最终在国际空间站上演示了一条真正意义上的飞毯。本月,若田光一当前摄像机的面驾驶飞毯进行试飞。在此之前,日本公众曾建议他进行一系列有趣的零重力实验,其中就包括测试飞毯在内。

  若田光一的同伴可能注意到,他并不经常换内裤。这倒并不是因为他不讲卫生,而是为了测试一款用抗菌材料制成的可自行除臭的内裤。这种内裤可用于未来为期数月甚至数年的太空任务。

  太空时代的内裤、T恤、短裤和袜子可以穿一周并且不用清洗,从穿戴者身旁经过的宇航员也不用紧捂鼻子,唯恐闻到令人不愉快的气味。这些衣物能够吸水,与身体隔绝,几分钟内就能干透。开发人员表示它们穿着起来也非常舒适并且时尚。据悉,“奋进”号航天飞机将于6月将若田光一送回地球。(孝文)

Russia is considering the future of his removing the ISS



According to the BBC, Russian specialists from the space industry are discussing the possibility of removing the Russian segment of ISS and its continued presence in space, after the ISS project will be decided turn, and a station to flood.
