ViviSat Launched

DULLES, VA. – January 13, 2011 – U.S. Space LLC, a U.S.-based creator of dedicated space solutions for government and commercial clients, and ATK [NYSE: ATK], an aerospace, defense, and commercial products company, today announced the creation of ViviSat, a new satellite life extension venture. ViviSat provides geosynchronous satellite operators with flexible, scalable, capital-efficient, and low-risk in-orbit mission extension and protection services that can add several years to the revenue-producing life of a satellite.

ViviSat’s Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV) is designed to dock with the orbiting satellite, securely latch on to it, and serve as a back-up propulsion system.  This enables a mission extension for satellites which have run out of maneuvering fuel yet still have plenty of electrical power to operate their payloads.  ViviSat services include rendezvous and docking without interruption of satellite operation, long-term station-keeping and attitude control, relocation to different orbits or orbital slots, de-orbiting, and rescue and re-orbiting of satellites stranded in incorrect orbital slots.

Horowitz and Wilson outlined the roles of the two companies in the ViviSat venture. U.S. Space is the operating entity, with responsibility for mission management, marketing, legal, and finance. ATK is the mission prime contractor, with responsibility for manufacture and delivery of the spacecraft, launch and ground segments. Horowitz and Wilson also announced the ViviSat senior team:

ViviSat为GEO轨道卫星提供延寿服务。老美这一技术已经这么成熟,都商业化了???

从图上看是通过一颗小型轨道拖船"space tug”与目标卫星建立刚性连接,连接点位于目标卫星LAE侧的适配器支架,所有卫星都有这个装置,且支架与主承力结构相连,完全可承受对接时的过载,确实是很精巧的设计。

ATK参与该项目说明space tug可能是以Tacsat-3平台作为基础,针对GEO环境和交会对接进行某些改进

奇怪,这个支架是需要预装的通用接口么?

另外,如果它能这样延寿,为什么不再打一颗星上去了事?毕竟卫星要是寿命到期,就不止是燃料耗尽的问题了:(

以后卫星的燃料舱和动力舱和主体分离吧,每逢到寿了就换掉一半。

  [据美国航天参考网2011年1月13日报道] 1月13日,美国太空有限责任公司宣布与阿联特技术系统公司(ATK)联合成立维维卫星公司(ViviSat)。维维卫星公司旨在为地球同步轨道卫星运营商提供灵活且可升级的资本有效、低风险在轨延寿和防护服务,可使卫星工作寿命增加数年。
  
  维维公司任务扩展飞行器(MEV)旨在与在轨卫星对接并牢固锁紧,充当备用推进系统,如下图所示。这能够延长机动燃料已耗尽但仍有大量电力可使有效载荷工作的卫星的任务寿命。
  
  维维卫星公司的服务包括在卫星运行不间断的情况下使MEV与之交会对接,执行长期位置保持和姿态控制、重新确定不同的轨道或轨道槽、离轨、救援以及使搁浅在错误轨道槽内的卫星重新入轨等服务。
  
  美国太空有限责任公司的联合创始人、维维公司总裁爱德华D·霍洛维茨说:“维维公司是一家专注于为卫星运营商、美国政府及其联合政府合作伙伴提供在轨卫星延寿和防护服务的新公司。维维公司的服务模式在财务效率,运行灵活性和风险规避方面提供一种改变游戏规则的方式”。
  
  ATK航天器系统和服务分部总经理、维维公司董事会成员兼副总裁汤姆·威尔逊说:“在轨任务扩展和运行防护是一个全新的市场,维维公司将使运营商扩展其卫星任务持续时间,提升资产效益”。

话说如果能“在轨延寿”也同样可以“在轨减寿”:如果MEV强制一颗正常卫星的天线和太阳能板无法正确指向,或者干脆将后者推至坟墓轨道......

NASA will conduct a remote refueling experiment at the International Space Station during the final space shuttle mission set to launch in June. The mission will involve refueling a mock spacecraft remotely from the ground.

Frank Cepollina, NASA deputy associate director in the space service capabilities office at the center, described the Robotic Refueling Mission to Space News last April:

NASA plans to demonstrate in-orbit satellite refueling at the international space station with the help of Dextre, the two-armed Canadian robot. In an experiment scheduled to be conducted in the next six to 12 months, Dextre will be equipped with special tools on the end of its arms to cut through a satellite’s exterior, insulation and wiring, hook up a hose and pump hydrazine into the satellite. For the experiment, NASA will be relying on a simulated satellite, being built by NASA Goddard engineers and scheduled to be completed in October. The mock spacecraft — essentially just the back end of a satellite — will be bolted to an Express Logistics Carrier, a platform attached to the space station’s exterior. Once the simulated spacecraft and tools are completed, the equipment will be sent to the space station.

“The simulated spacecraft is fully wrapped, like a spacecraft in geosynchronous or low Earth orbit,” Cepollina said. The experiment will be directed by astronauts on the ground, probably located at Johnson Space Center in Houston, and will not involve any of the space station crew. “The fundamental objective is to prove that you don’t have to design your satellites to be refueled on orbit,” Cepollina said. “You can refuel existing fleets.”

Following this experiment, NASA plans to demonstrate the work can be done autonomously, Cepollina said. That demonstration will be important to show that satellites traveling 14,000 kilometers from Earth in geosynchronous orbit also can be refueled and repaired. “We are trying to develop the dexterity of robots to fix spacecraft so they can continue to do their jobs, Cepollina said. “You would never buy a car that was not repairable, why should we buy a satellite that’s not?”

It will be interesting to see how this experiment goes.

低轨卫星如果频繁变轨的话,燃料使用肯定比器件老化快。

The plan is to conduct a full-blown test of the technology in space by late 2018 and begin operations a few months later, said Tom Wilson, vice president of strategy and business development at Orbital ATK. If successful, the initiative could “change the way we manufacture satellites, and how we operate satellites,” he said in an interview. “I think the market is ready for it, finally.”
With dozens of big telecommunications satellites running low on fuel each year, Mr. Wilson said the company plans to build and launch four additional, more-advanced tugs by 2020. In addition to repositioning satellites, the aim is to eventually fuel or repair ailing craft with robotic technology.

SES正在与OA和MDA进行谈判,讨论在轨推进剂加注和载荷更换的问题。两家公司将分别利用一颗SES的通讯卫星进行在轨维护演示,OA的vivisat方案是只针对单一客户提供服务,MDA的方案则针对多个客户,俗称轨道加油站。
PS:SES真是吃螃蟹上瘾了,把DARPA和NASA的活都干了。
SES said specifically it had opened negotiations with two companies — industry officials said they are Dulles, Virginia-based Orbital ATK’s Vivisat and MDA Corp. of Canada — “to have each extend the life of one of our satellites once their services are operational.”

The two in-orbit servicing projects take different approaches. Orbital ATK’s Vivisat launches a small vehicle that latches onto the target communications satellite and stays attached to it, providing fuel. MDA Corp. has designed an in-orbit fuel depot that would visit satellites, fuel them and then leave to service other customers.

OA和Intelsat签署合同,将于2018年发射MEV-1推进舱(Mission Extension Vehicle),先与坟墓轨道里的一颗退役卫星进行对接演示,然后为Intelsat的一颗卫星提供延寿服务。
MEV-1为全电星,装备一个对接机构(更准确的说是捕捉机构),与远地点引擎建立刚性连接,提供5年的推进和姿控服务。

PS:我这还夸SES喜欢吃螃蟹呢,SES的螃蟹还没买,Intelsat就已经做熟了
Orbital ATK is offering the Mission Extension Vehicle (MEV), a spacecraft designed to rendezvous with a commercial satellite and dock to the nozzle of its apogee kick motor and surrounding adapter ring. The MEV would then take over propulsion and attitude control for the satellite, offering up to five years of extended life.

Intelsat has agreed to be the customer for the first MEV mission, named MEV-1 and scheduled for launch in 2018. MEV-1 will first dock with a retired satellite in a graveyard orbit above stationary orbit to test its systems, then dock with an active Intelsat satellite to extend its life for five years.

同一篇报道里提到vivisat已解散,作为主要股东的OA已全面接管其在轨服务的相关业务
PS:之前一位OA高层在谈及对在轨推进剂加注的看法时曾开玩笑说他准备把油箱盖焊上。油箱盖焊上感情是因为挂上了副油箱
The MEV has been under development for several years, but previously by ViviSat, a joint venture of Orbital ATK and satellite operator U.S. Space. Wilson said the joint venture was recently dissolved because it failed to raise sufficient outside funding to continue work on the concept.
