MEV-1其实不能算轨道“加油站”,因为它的服务是1v1的,加油站应该是1vN,叫轨道“副油箱”更恰当一些。

1v1也是加油站,只不过这个v还有vip专用之意,,,

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. — The Defense Department is showing interest in using Orbital ATK’s new in-orbit satellite life extension vehicle to service military in addition to commercial spacecraft, a company executive said Tuesday.

“I think they are very interested in the service, but in the US government to go from interest to funding to contract tends to take time,” said Tom Wilson, president of the newly formed Space Logistics, a wholly owned subsidiary of Orbital ATK.

Orbital ATK announced Intelsat, a communications satellite services provider, as the first customer for its new satellite life extension service on Tuesday during the Space Foundation’s annual Space Symposium. Under the agreement, Orbital ATK will manufacture, test and launch the first commercial servicing vehicle called Mission Extension Vehicle-1 (MEV-1), a 2,000 kilogram system that will enable satellite operators to perform critical maintenance work in space.

MEV-1 can dock with a spacecraft up to 3,500 to 4,000 kilograms, allowing it to accommodate “just about everything that’s up there today,” Wilson said. The vehicle is “absolutely” capable of servicing large DoD satellites, but it will take the government time to figure out how to contract for the service, he said.

Orbital ATK has talked with a few potential government clients about the service and could reach an agreement with one of these customers as early as 2020, Wilson said.

However, the government wants to see how the service performs in the commercial marketplace before making a commitment, he stressed.

“From a government perspective, they would really like to see us kick this off in the commercial market [first] and establish the service,” Wilson said, adding that one potential customer is NASA’s weather satellite programs.

Controlled by the Orbital ATK’s satellite operations team, the MEV-1 uses a docking system that attaches to existing features on a customer’s satellite, according to company executives. The vehicle has a 15-year design life, and will be able to perform numerous missions during its lifespan.

The MEV-1 is expected to launch in late 2018 for in-orbit testing and demonstration. The vehicle will begin its mission extension service for Intelsat in 2019, according to Orbital ATK.

But MEV-1 is just the beginning, said Orbital ATK CEO David Thompson on Tuesday. Over the next five years, the company envisions building and deploying a small fleet of about five commercial servicing vehicles to provide additional in-orbit services such as refueling, robotic repair of damaged satellites, and even assembly of multiple structures and advanced payloads, he said.

“We believe that there is a real market for space logistics,” Wilson said Tuesday during a news briefing at the Space Symposium. “Our innovative solutions that we’ve developed over the past decade will extend the lives of useful satellites, enable customers to protect their franchises and drive improved asset value.”

COLORADO SPRINGS, Colo. – United Launch Alliance’s next-generation rocket, the future Vulcan Aces, will be able to refuel in space, opening the door to in-orbital assembly and other complex space operations.

Most aerospace companies focus on reusing the first-stage rocket, ULA president and chief executive Tory Bruno said in a Wednesday interview at the Space Foundation’s annual National Space Symposium. SpaceX, for example, recently landed a first-stage Falcon 9 rocket on a barge in the Atlantic Ocean after it successfully launched a payload into space.

The concept of a reusable first-stage rocket, if it proves reliable, could transform the space launch market, potentially driving down the cost of space launch to unprecedented levels, analysts contend.

But ULA is taking a different approach. Bruno wants to reuse the upper stage, which — unlike the first stage, which falls to the ground before it reaches space — is orbital.

“We had the idea, well, why do you have to bring it back to Earth just to reuse it?” Bruno said “Why don’t we just leave it in space?”

Atlas V’s upper stage, dubbed Centaur, can operate for about seven or eight hours in space, which allows ULA to directly inject a spacecraft into geosynchronous orbit. The next-generation Vulcan’s upper-stage rocket, dubbed Aces, will be able to operate for seven or eight days using its initial loaded propellant, Bruno said.

This will allow the Aces to perform multiple missions in space, such as rendezvous and proximity, and even refueling operations to further extend its life, Bruno stressed. ULA plans to build up a fleet of upper-stage Aces in space that can refuel each other using excess fuel, Bruno said.

“So that means that you can do multiple missions, and you can do rendezvous and now it’s also practical to refuel it in space and just use it forever,” Bruno said.

This capability opens the door to a variety of complex space missions, such as “distributed lift,” or taking spacecraft up in pieces and assembling them in space, he said.

“It will really change the way we go to space,” Bruno said. “It’s going make it practical to build giant structures and infrastructure in space.”

Bruno expects the launch of ULA’s first iteration of the Vulcan, which uses the Centaur upper stage, to occur in 2019 at the earliest. The second iteration, the Vulcan Aces, will be available three to four years later, in about 2024, he said.

去年被止回阀坑过的除了IS-33e外还有MOUS-5,既然Intelsat是MEV-1的客户,不排除海军是MEV-2的客户

如果转发器质量好,这种小玩意儿可以跟着载荷富余的GTO发射跑,多用几年就收回成本了

推进剂通常都是足够18-20年的,再考虑技术更新换代,其实只有在轨故障的情况才需要这个MEV帮忙

除了帮助稳定轨道,这种延寿服务还能做什么吗?换转发器应该是不行吧

主要就是保位,不能换转发器

如果只能保位,那只能用于那些转发器性能较好,或者因为火箭故障浪费太多推进剂的卫星。

目前确实是这样,首发用户就是IS-33e

哦,就是那颗坏了阀门的卫星啊,看波段与覆盖图主要服务对象应该是Ku小锅,对卫星稳定性要求高
