NASA发布的第一次CAPS(Capsule Parachute Assembly System )测试
On September 21st, 2011,the NASA Capsule Parachute Assembly System (CPAS) team successfully completed an Orion parachute development drop test. This is the first in a series of the most flight-like parachute tests to date, utilizing a parachute compartment representative of the one that will be on the Orion spacecraft.
The drop tests, conducted at the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Grounds in Yuma, Arizona, support the design and development of the Orion parachute recovery system. Flying at an altitude of 25,000 ft, a drop-test article called the Parachute Compartment Drop Test Vehicle (PCDTV) was deployed from a C-130. Once airborne and after reaching test conditions under two programmer parachutes, two drogue chutes were deployed at an altitude of 19,000 feet, followed by three pilot parachutes which in turn deployed the three main parachutes.The drop test article landed at the predicted speed of 25 feet per second.

This test examined two particular simulated failure modes; the first simulated failure being a skipped second reefing stage on the drogue parachutes resulting in higher parachute loads, and the second simulated failure being a failure to deploy one of the three pilot parachutes resulting in only two of the three main parachutes being deployed.
Flying at an altitude of 25,000 ft, a drop-test vehicle called the Parachute Compartment Drop Test Vehicle (PCDTV) was deployed from a C-130 and separated from the test platform. Once airborne and after reaching test conditions under two programmer parachutes, the spacecraft parachute sequence began with two drogue chutes deployed at an altitude of 19,000 feet, followed by two pilot parachutes which in turn deployed the two main parachutes. The drop test article landed at the predicted speed of 33 feet per second, the maximum touchdown velocity of the Orion Spacecraft.
Since 2007, the Orion program has conducted a vigorous parachute air and ground test program and provided the chutes for NASA's successful pad abort test in 2010. Lessons learned from this experience have improved Orion's parachute system.

On February 29th, 2012, the NASA Capsule Parachute Assembly System (CPAS) team successfully completed an Orion parachute development drop test conducted at the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Grounds in Yuma, Arizona. This is the third in a series of the most flight-like parachute tests to date with a representative parachute compartment for the Orion spacecraft, and is the first to operate a Parachute Test Vehicle (PTV) representing the Orion Spacecraft capsule.
This particular drop test examined how the wake from the Orion spacecraft would affect the performance of the parachute system. The wake is the disturbance of the air flow behind the vehicle. Parachutes optimally perform in smooth air that allows the proper lift. A wake of choppy air can reduce the parachute inflation performance. This test will be the first conducted with the representative MPCV wake in consideration using the full size vehicle and complete system.
The test hardware was extracted from a C-17 aircraft supported by the U.S. Air Force at an altitude of 25,000 feet above the U.S. Army's Yuma Proving Grounds. After reaching test conditions under programmer parachutes, the drogue chutes were deployed between 15,000 and 20,000 feet. After reaching steady state, the drogues were cut away and three pilot parachutes were deployed pulling out the three main parachutes. There were 17 parachutes deployed during this test; 9 were test technique related and 8 were Orion system parachutes.
Since 2007, the Orion program has conducted a vigorous parachute air and ground test program and provided the chutes for NASA's successful pad abort test in 2010. All of the tests build an understanding of the chutes technical performance for eventual human rated certification.

The European Space Agency (ESA) haveannounced they will inform NASA they are ready to build an ATV derived ServiceModule for Orion, to be ready for the first launch of the Space Launch System(SLS) in 2017. The announcement came after the UK stepped up with additionalfunding, marking the country’s first real human BEO commitment.

原来如此。猎户座原设计的服务舱已经搞得差不多了,ESA横插一杠,除了分担制造费用,双方设计上都得做很多修改,真的就划算么。
另外,之前看过个设想图,猎户座有三舱构型,轨道舱在发射时是装在上面级上,入轨后飞船调转过来对接、拉出,有点像阿波罗的流程。星座计划下马以后,是不是还存在就不知道了,也许只是示意有这么一种可能。

留意一下这个帖子会发现关于Orion/MPCV进展的新闻都是关于返回舱的,服务舱只有可行性研究。有迹象显示NASA目前没有足够的经费在SLS-1任务前完成MPCV-SM,而ESA在ATV-5任务之后缺乏一个投资ISS的机会,因此ESA试图通过“出资在ATV-SM的基础上开发并为MPCV提供2个SM”的方式来支付参与ISS的费用。
但是正像你说的,这种做法的可行性有多少还是个未知数,ESA也只是表达了一个构想,并没有具体投资,因为还需要NASA和美国政府批准才行。

如果真的采用ATV-SM,泡汤的可不只是一个太阳能板,Aerojet正在开发的推进系统,从OME到R-4D再到RCS都得停工,整个SM的相关设备都将来自ESA,美国的这些航天巨头们显然不会善罢甘休。

Because it will return fromgreater distances, Orion will reenter the Earth’s atmosphere at speeds of morethan 20,000 mph.After re-entry, the parachutes are all that will lower the capsule carryingastronauts back to Earth.

Orion uses five parachutes. Three are mainparachutes measuring 116 feet wide and two are drogue parachutes measuring 23feet wide. The 21,000-pound capsule needs only two main parachutes and onedrogue. The extra two provide a backup in case one of the primary parachutesfails.

To verify Orion could land safely with onlyone drogue parachute, engineers dropped a spacecraft mockup from a plane 25,000feet above the Arizonadesert and simulated a failure of one of the drogues. About 30 seconds into themockup’s fall, the second drogue parachute opened and slowed the mockup downenough for the three main parachutes to take over the descent.

The next Orion parachute test is scheduledfor February and will simulate a failure of one of the three main parachutes.

This is 15 times farther than the International SpaceStation’s orbit and farther than any spacecraft designed to carry humans hasgone in more than 40 years. The main flight objective is to test Orion’s heatshield performance at speeds generated during a return from deep space.

其实用欧洲的服务舱的说法由来已久了,而且很可能初期真会用欧洲的服务舱,不过以美国人的性格来说是不会接受最终一直用欧洲的服务舱的

  NASA第一次在建造深空载人太空舱方面寻求国外航天局的帮助。

  合作意味着“猎户座”将在初步设计基础上略有变动,主要是将原本的两个相距180°的伸出式太阳帆改为十字排列的四个太阳帆。这种设计仿效欧洲无人自主转移飞行器(ATV)货运飞船。
  
  欧空局计划为此花费2亿美元,包括2017年进行首次试验的“猎户座”服务舱段和此后飞行的第二个服务舱段的一部分。协议没有规定欧洲宇航员是否能搭乘“猎户座”,但双方都表示存在这种可能性。
