The scaled-down model of the reusable launch vehicle (RLV) India is planning to build is expected to be shifted from the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre (VSSC) here at Thumba to the Sriharikota spaceport by the end of March.

If things go as planned, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) will have the keenly awaited Reusable Launch Vehicle-Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD) mission –  a first step towards building a desi space shuttle – in May. VSSC, which is ISRO’s nodal agency for launch vehicles, is engaged in the final integration of the ‘space plane’ portion of the RLV-TD. The ‘space plane’ will sit atop a booster rocket used on the Polar Satellite Launch Vehicle (PSLV), which will carry it to a height of 70 km. The prototype, one-sixth the size of the proposed RLV and weighing 1.5 tonnes, will glide back to earth and land in the Bay of Bengal.

This will be the first of a series of technology demonstrations ISRO will conduct before actually building a full-sized RLV. ‘’We hope to have the test some time in May. It will come after the next PSLV mission which will carry the seventh and final satellite in the IRNSS (Indian Regional Navigation Satellite System) series,’’ VSSC director Dr K Sivan told this paper. On Thursday, ISRO successfully placed the sixth IRNSS satellite in orbit. Although the next IRNSS mission was originally planned for March 31, it will be delayed up to April.

The RLV-TD mission was originally planned for the middle of 2015, but the development of the ‘space plane’ prototype had been delayed, forcing ISRO to put off the mission.

       据《印度时报》4月18日报道,印度空间研究组织(Isro)正在研发一款“可回收运载火箭技术演示验证器”(RLV-TD)。按计划,这款可回收的空间运载火箭将于不久后发射。据报道,目前,该RLV-TD项目已经处于发射前测试的最后阶段。Isro主席库马尔(Kiran Kumar)表示,RLV-TD将于近日运抵班加罗尔进行声学测试以检测其在最初启动阶段的状态。

印度将于今年五月底测试发射RLV-TD可重复运载火箭,它的外观和美国的航天飞机很相似,目前RLV-TD尚处于试点阶段,比最终版本小了近6倍。最终版本将至少需要10 - 15年才能拿到。如果可重复使用的技术成功,它可以把发射成本降低到每公斤2000美元。

For the very first time in its history, the Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is actually growing wings as it embarks this month on a never before space flight that will make history.
The Indian space agency is all set to undertake the maiden launch of its very own indigenous version of a ‘space shuttle’, a fully made-in-India effort.
A sleek winged body almost the weight and size of a sports utility vehicle is being given final touches on Sunday at Sriharikota, awaiting the final countdown.
Yes, the big powers abandoned the idea of a winged reusable launch vehicle but India’s frugal engineers believe the solution to reducing cost of launching satellites into orbit is to recycle the rocket or make it reusable. Scientists at ISRO believe that they could reduce the cost of launching stuff into space by as much as 10 times if reusable technology succeeds, bringing it down to US $2,000 per kg.
Very soon and if all goes well, possibly before the monsoon sets in, India’s space port at Sriharikota on the coast of the Bay of Bengal in Andhra Pradesh will witness the launch of the indigenously made Reusable Launch Vehicle -Technology Demonstrator (RLV-TD). This will be the first time ISRO will launch a space craft, which actually has delta wings and after launch it will be glided back onto a virtual runway in the Bay of Bengal.
The RLV-TD is unlikely to be recovered from sea during this experiment as it is expected that the vehicle will disintegrate on impact with water since it is not designed to float. The purpose of the experiment is not to see it float but to glide and navigate from a velocity five times higher than the speed of sound onto a designated virtual runway in the Bay of Bengal some 500 km from the coast.
Very similar in its looks to the American space shuttle, the RLV-TD being experimented is a scale model which is almost 6 times smaller than the final version. K Sivan, director of the Vikram Sarabhai Space Centre, Thiruvananthapuram, says, “These are just the first baby steps towards the big Hanuman leap.”
The final version will take at least 10-15 years to get ready since designing a human rated reusable rocket is no kid stuff.
